Shadows and Light
Meditation music for Zen Shakuhachi Flute
with Adrian Freedman
Thursday, December 21 at 7 pm
A contemplative exploration of shadows and light with Adrian Freedman,
master of the Japanese Zen Shakuhachi flute.
In the beginning of the 1990's Adrian spent seven years living in Japan and immersed in Zen Buddhist temple traditions, learning the magic of the bamboo flute from shakuhachi master Yokoyama Katsura.
He has spent countless hours playing the shakuhachi in meditative practice and in concerts all over the world.
This evening the sound and vibration of the flute will deepen our meditation and bring us to a space of silence.
This will be a unique meditative experience for all present.

"Adrian Freedman knows the music of silence. His transparent improvisations draw the listener home to the source, sound before sound, opening the heart into the beauty of being and love’s eternal presence."

Adrian Freedman
is a multiinstrumentalist born in Leeds, Yorkshire in the North of England. He started piano lessons at age six, violin at seven and trumpet at nine. From then his musical journey would take him through such diverse musical traditions as jazz, classical baroque, contemporary, avant-garde and world music. He studied music at Manchester University and earned an MA in the performance practice of 17th Century instrumental music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
His interest in Japanese music grew steadily through the years, and culminated in the late 1980's with him traveling to Japan for a 7 year study with the Japanese shakuhachi Zen flute master Yokoyama Katsuya.
Today Adrian lives with his wife Noriko in the village of Dartington on the edge of the stunning Dartmoor National Park in Devon. Here he continues his practice of traditional Zen music for shakuhachi, as well as composing new music and giving concerts in ancient churches and sacred spaces around the world. This is his 5th visit to Zen House.

In April 2014 he was invited to play shakuhachi for His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Kyoto, Japan.
"Truly wonderful."
