One day workshopSaturday May 18Chinese Calligraphy Workshop with Buddhist Nun Chang-Chen Shi
This is a great opportunity to engage with a highly respected Buddhist Nun from Taiwan,
learn this beautiful art and create your very own unique calligraphy master-piece!
Equipment will be provided.
Ven. Chang-Chen Shi will start the workshop with a short meditation to help settle the mind. Before starting any calligraphy, she will discuss/reflect upon how calligraphy can be used as part of a mindfulness/meditative practice. She will also speak about her own practice and how calligraphy has supported it. In addition to a short history of calligraphy..
Participants will start by learning some basic calligraphy skills such as how to position and hold the brush and the types of strokes to use After that there will be time to practice strokes and symbols before producing a Chinese Zen Sutra character. There will be a number of characters on show to choose from. You may also create your own design supported and guided by Ven. Chang Chen. You can sign and date your calligraphy pieces using Chinese characters and can take home your completed work. It will be a piece of art to frame and put up on a wall to remind you of your workshop experience and hopefully encourage you to explore calligraphy further.
The day will finish with a tea ceremony and an opportunity for discussion/sharing about the calligraphy all participants have created and their experience of the workshop.
